Discover the rich history of ancient civilizations in a way that captivates the high school student. These four options for study use Secrets of the Wildflowers as a guide to help your learner explore ancient civilizations.
As the author of Secrets of the Wildflowers, I’m thrilled to share with you the journey of Miu, a resilient young woman navigating the complexities of ancient civilizations. Through her story, high schoolers are transported to a time when patriarchal rule, oppressive gods, and societal constraints dictated the lives of women and men like Miu.
Secrets of the Wildflowers: Dive into the Ancient World with Your High Schooler
Opening the pages of Secrets of the Wildflowers, you’re quickly immersed in their beliefs about how their world worked. When we often think about how the world began, we start with Genesis, and that’s exactly what I did when I started researching this book. Instead of coming away with more scientific proof of creation or evolution, I was transported into a culture that had its own stories of the flood and creation.
My aim in writing this book was to show readers the similarities between Abram’s story and his culture, and then contrast their stories with the personal and relational nature of Yahweh. So below I’ve shared four ways Secrets of the Wildflowers can help your high schooler learn more about ancient civilizations and human nature.
4 Ways To Learn About Ancient Civilizations In High School
1. Discovering Ancient Thought and Culture
One of the most fascinating aspects of writing Secrets of the Wildflowers was delving into the rich tapestry of ancient cultures. From learning how they believed the gods were annoyed with them to the ancient city they believed was the Garden of Eden, I was enamored by the social dynamics and customs of these ancient people. Through months of research and adventurous storytelling, I aimed to immerse your high schooler in the sights, sounds, and smells of Miu’s world.
2. Themes of Freedom and Independence
At the heart of Secrets of the Wildflowers lies the theme of freedom and independence. And it’s probably at the heart of your high schooler as well. The difference is Miu learns what real freedom looks like, and it probably isn’t what your student thinks. Through Miu’s struggles, readers are reminded of the importance of community, faith, and trusting in a God who wants what’s best for us.
3. Themes of Faith
Every city in the ancient world had its own set of gods and rituals. In Secrets of the Wildflowers, I wanted to explore these complexities during this time. Just like our world today is desperately seeking something to put their hope in, so were these ancient people. The gods of their day were capricious, acting on their every whim, while also mimicking very closely human behavior. Miu didn’t believe the gods were much different than herself, therefore not trusting them. But once she encounters the true God, her life is turned upside down. Miu’s journey is of self-exploration and introspection that resonates across generations.
4. Themes of Violence:
It’s important to acknowledge that Secrets of the Wildflowers contains a few scenes of violence, which may be triggering for some readers. The ancient world was indeed a brutal and unforgiving place, and the narrative does not shy away from depicting the harsh realities of life during this time period. There is a scene where a child is murdered, but it is not explained in any detail. There’s also a scene where Miu goes to what today might be considered a witch doctor. She inquires how he can help a dying girl, and in turn, the doctor provides some dark magic in exchange for healing. Miu does question these behaviors. However, amidst the darkness, there is hope, resilience, and redemption that illuminate the human experience.
5. Offering a Free Book Club Guide:
To enhance readers’ engagement with the text, I am offering a free book club guide designed to deepen your learners’ understanding of the ancient world that Abram lived in. This short guide includes:
- discussion questions
- historical context
- a quick game for family members to play together
I hope this resource will spark conversations and foster a deeper appreciation for the ancient world.
