Do you have an elementary-aged kiddo in your house? I loved homeschooling science with my elementary aged child. At our house, we considered the elementary years as a time of exploration. Children are so eager to learn new things at that age and my child was very interested in science. She also loved hands-on learning and I also wanted to follow her interests in our homeschool. Today I will share with you a favorite resource for elementary earth science.
So, when it came to science, we unschooled it, following my daughter’s interests. That worked well, but I was having to pull together everything myself. When we found some publishers that would do the prepping for me, I was so happy.
Two of our favorite publishers of hands-on science workbooks, are Evan-Moor and Carson Dellosa. Have you heard of them? They are not specifically for homeschoolers but their books work super well for homeschooling kids. Who doesn’t want a little help in pulling together a science unit study?
Hands On Elementary Earth Science
Carson Dellosa publishes a great little book on elementary science. It is a fun to do science experiment book called Hands-On Earth Science.
This book was just what I needed when my daughter was interested in earth science. She was all about the weather, collecting rocks at the beach and always looking up at the stars, wanting to know more. Hands-On Earth Science gave her information on all of these aspects of earth science. There are also experiments which taught her the concepts in just the way she wanted to learn.
This book introduces your child to elementary:
1. Astronomy
2.Geology
3 .Meteorology
4. Oceanography
5. Paleontology, and
6. Rocks and Minerals
Your child will learn about each of these topics through simple experiments! Did I say simple?
Yes! There is one experiment per page. The pages are laid out nicely, with easy to follow directions for each experiment. They also share the science concept involved, in language which is written directly to the child.
Each page includes the following:
- What You Will Do – The purpose of the experiment
- Get It Together – Your supply list, always VERY short, and almost always easy to find around the house
- Procedure – What to do, one step at a time
- A Closer Look – which explains, in simple language, key science concepts
Here’s how the pages are laid out…
My daughter loved this book. She felt like a scientist! These experiments are also great for building self esteem, as they are set up for success. I love how this book speaks to the child! Learning by doing is the best way, don’t you think?
If you are looking for a very helpful resource for elementary science, my family recommends Hands-On Earth Science. For more information or to order your very frugal copy (some are $.o1 plus shipping), please click here.
