Let me tell you about an answer to a prayer. Just when my high schooler started really struggling with Algebra, I heard about Learn Math Fast. Yay! We have been using Learn Math Fast for a back-to-basics, refresher type learning. Well, maybe it is a ‘finally learning it for real way’. Either way, it is always, always good to learn a concept in a different way. Maybe you are looking for something like this too?

Now, you may not need a ‘to the rescue’ type resource. But we did. And now we use these math books with all of our ages. Just because it is always good to use another resource to learn a concept a different way. Did I say that already? Yes, repetition is good.
“If an older person, who has never understood math, reads this system, she too will finally get it.” (Yes! This is what we have experienced.) And because I saw the light bulb turn on for my high schooler, I have decided that all my children should use this resource as well. See, I have been asking my high schooler to read just a bit of the book each day. And I love the “Oh! NOW it get it!” type exclamations I am hearing.
How We Use Learn Math Fast in Our Homeschool
So, we are in the thick of Algebra and geometry with our high schoolers. On the other end of our age range, I have a third grader right in midst of multiplication. Then there is our first grader learning addition and subtraction. And right in the middle, our middle schooler in pre-algebra. Can you see how these books meet so many needs?
JK Mergens is the author of the Learn Math Fast System, a series of seven books that teach 1st – 11th grade math using the unique methods she created to teach her son. She shared more about how Learn Math Fast works in Why Can’t My Child Learn Multiplication? here at The Curriculum Choice.
What Does Learn Math Fast System Include?
Explains 1st through 12th grade math a new way! (Check out all those manipulatives!)
- Volume 1 – “how to master addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division before advancing to fractions”
- Volume 2 – “the key to learning the relationship between fractions” – roughly 4th grade math.
- Volume 3 – pre-algebra and ‘What is X?’ and especially clearing up the confusion of slopes.
- Volume 4 – introduces geometry with a full kit of math manipulatives (notice geometry is introduced after pre-algebra)
- Volume 5 – covers Algebra I with a specific focus on quadratic equations and formulas, taking about 4-5 months to complete.
- Volume 6 – “teaches how to build an equation in order to solve advanced story problems. Will also show how to use this knowledge to solve difficult problems similar to the the ones found on the SAT.”
- Volume 7 (*NEW*) – teaches geometry in 30 lessons – we received this volume just recently and have already been blessed. Look at the manipulatives, the illustrations! (Oh how I wish I’d had this book when I took geometry.)
Even more details on each book at the Learn Math Fast website. Besides the wonderful math books, there are also great math articles and free printables at the Learn Math Fast site. View sample pages and take a placement test as well.
Don’t forget to read Why Can’t My Child Learn Multiplication? (here at The Curriculum Choice) where JK Mergens shared: “Addition is so important in math that even during calculus you will often be required to solve simple addition. Have you ever heard of The 9’s Trick? It’s a quick way to recall all the answers to 9 times any single digit number. If you aren’t familiar with it, watch the 2 minute video below. It’s a fantastic trick, but if you can’t quickly solve problems such as 6 + 3, even a trick as effective as this one won’t work.”
In Summary
Learn Math Fast has certainly met and continues to meet needs in our home. With a rising senior taking the SAT and ACT, another high schooler right after her, plus a middle schooler and two elementary students, Learn Math Fast is and will be an integral part of our math learning. Used for many years to come!

This series sounds intriguing to me. I have a rising senior who needs help understanding math- it’s her weakest area on the PSATs. Thank you for your posts focusing on products for high schoolers, they have been very helpful to me to find products that will strengthen the base I’ve given them as they get ready to move into the next phase of life.
Tricia says
It is such a blessing to ‘see’ that light bulb come on in my child’s head! (And homeschooling high school is the best 🙂 )

My daughter is struggling with learning her math facts. She still needs to use the multiplication chart to solve problems. I would really like her to be able to look at a problem and solve it in her head. I also have a junior who took the SAT this spring. Math was his score which needs the most practice. These books seem like they would help him to better understand the whole of mathematics.

Volume I – V would be what I’d need! 🙂 I hope to win this giveaway!! Thank you for offering it!

I would love to try this system out with our two boys. I feel like we are constantly pushing to stay fresh on the basics as we move into new topics. So many times, I feel like I’m not explaining the best way for them to learn the material. Any resource that could help those “light bulbs” come on, would be a blessing!
Tammy Jones says
Volume 1 is what I need for my daughter as she painfully struggles with her math facts. I’m also interested in the Pre-Algebra one as my son will be starting that soon.
Ashley Lowry says
We always need math help in our house. These books sound great!
Kelly says
Definitely algebra!
Jessica White says
I have a nine year old still struggling with the basics. We’ve tried Singapore Math, Waldorf Math, several online programs but outside of the single digits she just gives up. This sounds like something that might work better and help her catch up with the basics.
ericab says
Thanks for the information on the program. Both my daughters struggle with addition and subtraction. We’ve tried everything. This program looks promising.
Alisha says
These book look really neat. I had never heard of them before!

Volume 6 in this series looks like it offers the help I will need as we enter into middle school and high school math. It appears to explain concepts well.

I think these books look great. I would like to try the first volume for my youngest starting homeschool, and I also have an 8th grader struggling with basics because they let them use calculators for everything in school…bah.
Lea Nichols says
Would love this! I have one struggling to learn his multiplication facts.

I would love to try these books with my boys. I would probably start with volume 1 and go through all of them as they learn.
Jenny Conard says
With three boys and three different experiences with math, I would love to increase our “light bulb” moments 🙂

I have really wanted to try this series but just haven’t pulled the trigger in purchasing it yet. I have two middle school/early high school aged daughters that are behind in math and desperately need to get caught up…this program looks like a God-send!!
Leslie says
I’ve been thinking about learn math fast for awhile. I have a student that struggles with math everyday and a student that just excels in math. I have a feeling this program would work well in our homeschool. Volumes 1-5 would be awesome we are moving into 7 grade this next year.
Kala says
I’ve been looking at this for my struggling child. I’ve been too nervous to try, this would be great to win to give it a chance!

These books look really great! I learned something new just from the 9s video 🙂 math is a weak subject for me, and homeschooling a 10 yrs old and 3 yr old I could use some neat tricks to help make it fun!
Krissy McLean says
I have four school age kiddos and one 3 year old. We are hitting middle school next year (yikes!) and have one going into 6th, then 4th and 1st. I feel like we will be all over the place with math. My older two could really use help with fractions, percentages and proportions so maybe books 5 and 6 for that and the younger two could easily spend time practicing basics math facts.
I never heard of this company before but am so intrigued. Wonder how they compare with the Life of Fred books?
At any rate I’m gonna take a closer look at this series. Great giveaway!!
Michelle says
We need all the help we can get with math.
Nancy Bram says
What an awesome resource! I’m so excited to learn more about this program for my struggling third grader.
Stacey J says
I have a rising 5th grader who still has to add and subtract with her fingers so anything that can help her learn those facts as well as multiplication are worth trying

We would probably start with Volume 1 or 2 with our 4th grader.

Definitely would like the first volume!
thanks!

This looks really interesting. I already have my student’s 7th grade math textbook, instructional DVD, workbooks, along with the teacher edition book, workbook answers and solutions, quiz/test generator.
I will definitely look into trying this system out for 8th grade, though. The example video was quite intriguing!

id love to start my kiddo off on the right foot with volume 1! We are new to homeschooling!

This looks like a great program. So many times it seems like wevrush to get our children up to standard and they really don’t understand what they have learned. This looks lime a great program for my children to use. They can learn at their own pace then move one when ready

Just starting our homeschool journey with rising 3rd, 6th and 8th graders plus a rising Jr. still in public school. Math never was my strength so I’m nervous about teaching it to my kiddos. It is nice to have a resource that gives another way of explaining things!

I was using Saxon Math and my kiddos were just turned off with it. Another homeschooling mom recommended Learn Math Fast. We tried it and to my surprise, they were doing very well with it. They even scored higher in Math during their yearly evaluations. We continued on and then they seem to have lost their zeal for LMF and we went back to Saxon. After their annual evaluations, they scored lower in math than the previous year! So for me that was confirmation, that LMF was working and we are faithfully using it again. 🙂
Tricia says
Oh wow, Lori! What a testimony for Learn Math Fast!
GABE says
Tricia, I am wondering all 7 years later if LMF worked well for your high schoolers? Did they fare well on the ACT/SAT? Did you have to supplement or fill in learning holes? I have yet to find a review for after a child completed the curriculum and how testing went. Your thoughts and experiences would be a blessing.
